On Friday is May 9th, which is the 80th anniversary of Victory Day, which Russia, among other places, celebrates as the day when the Soviets defeated the Nazis. Naturally, one of the current hotspots of fascism in the world today, Ukraine, is essentially threatening that they might strike Russia or even Moscow itself during that timeframe. Any such strike would almost certainly be symbolic and not aimed at anything too important, as I doubt even Zelensky and his American handlers would actually want to kill a world leader, not least somebody like Xi Jinping. But I would not be surprised if they tried something nonetheless, if only to disrupt the event in some way and not actually kill anybody.
And, as we’re on this topic, @EllenKelly@hexbear.net has reminded me that Tuesday is the anniversary of the Nazis burning the Institut für Sexualwissenschaf in 1933, an early institute advocating for the rights of LGBT people, and which also provided early forms of gender-affirming surgeries, as well as hormone therapies. We are currently seeing a crackdown on LGBT rights throughout swathes of the imperial core (as well as countries in the periphery, to the extent that those rights existed there already), and this Nazi-inspired movement will be similarly defeated in the future.

The US de-escalation with Ansar Allah appears to be at the behest of the Saudis, who were saying it would be embarrassing for Trump to visit while bombing Yemen, and could lead to “complications”:
Ansar Allah has reportedly, in not so many words, threatened to expand the engagement regionally, especially while Trump is in the region, if the bombings by the US (and possibly it’s allies?) don’t not stop.

Trump will be visiting KSA next week to meet with GCC leaders, his first official overseas trip of this term.

Pakistan has shot down five Indian planes and has taken some Indian soldiers prisoner, the country’s defense minister said. -Bloomberg
Wild if true. Source
I know nothing about the India/Pakistan conflict. What is happening? The news is making out like it’s a terrorism thing?
Piggybacking off of this, I heard there was a water dispute and India cut off a river or something? Anyone know about that?
India controls the flow of water from the Indus River system into Pakistan and has declared intention to stop the flow into Pakistan. This accounts for about 80% of the water volume used for agriculture in Pakistan, I imagine this would have pretty substantial impacts in the country if they go through with it fully.
I don’t think it’s viable long term to keep the dams closed, the water has to go somewhere and I don’t think that India has the infrastructure for mass diversion of rivers and tributaries. They can keep the dams as full as possible and restrict water flow that way though, only opening the sluce gates when no more water can be held back.
Pakistan is very reliant on the indus river (basically the largest and only “usable” one in the country), its also on the forefront of desertification in the continent. Karachi for example has regular water shortages since 10 years or so.
There was some sort of terrorist attack in Indian controlled Kashmir a few days ago. India blamed Pakistan, Pakistan denies any involvement. In response to that incident, India carried out airstikes on Pakistan, Pakistan then shot down Indian aircraft, with 1-3 Indian aircraft losses being confirmed so far, one loss with video, and Indian media saying that there are three aircraft crash sites in India.
Thank you
Arigatowl
Its about Kashmir and hindutva fascism as well as the new pro-us government in pakistan and ultimately the root of all evil - the British and their colonial shenanigans.
So there are no good sides in this one?
The communists in both countries.
The U.S. Navy lost another F/A-18 Super Hornet this week, after it fell in the Red Sea during an attempted landing on the USS Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier. The reason for Trump’s sudden announcement stopping the U.S. bombing campaign against Yemen is becoming more and more clear.
- Telegram
Arrestor cable or hook failure on landing apparently, still can’t believe that they haven’t rotated the Truman for another carrier, it’s clear that combat fatigue has set in. That’s just incompetence by the US Navy. The Truman CSG has shot down their own jet, lost an aircraft overboard during an evasive maneuver, and now had the arrestor cables or hook fail. While the first two happened during a Ansarallah attack on the CSG, I don’t see how an arrestor failure can be related to that.
USS Truman was annoyed with the attention shifting to India , so it lost another F-18
US President Donald Trump called Indian strikes in Pakistani territory “a shame”. - Reuters
India launches air strikes on Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir - BBC
India stated that its forces have launched “Operation Sindoor” hitting “terrorist infrastructure” in Pakistan. Indian forces struck nine sites in Pakistan with missiles. According to reports, intense shelling and loud explosions took place in border areas of Pakistani-administered Kashmir. Pakistan vowed to respond to the “cowardly attack.”
I don’t want to die in a nuclear holocaust, but I do miss the days of having like 500-1000 comments a day in here.
The real Nothing Ever Happens gang is in the (lack of) comments.
Why do India and Pakistan fight over their border? Is it more economic or more social?
This isn’t a border dispute. It’s political, there was a separatist extremist attack in Kashmir and India had to strike Pakistan to appease their islamophobic braying nationalists. Pakistan cannot accept this and responded
Lula, Traoré, Maduro, Diáz-Canel, and Xi Jinping will all be in Moscow to celebrate the 80th anniversary of Nazis eating shit to the Soviets. A very cool guest list.

The video from the Indian defence ministry about air raid preparedness entirely in English and almost every shot is AI.
This is just warporn slop for the anglo-treatlerites to consume surely?
I don’t think it is. English is the official language used in Government communications in India. They have tried pushing Hindi but it has always faced opposition from some states who see it as “imposition” of majority language.
Of course, most people (esp in Northern India) have trouble reading English, this propaganda is intended for top 10-20% “elite” mainly.
You can look at most Indian Central government sites, the orders and all are written mainly in English (‘link language’). State Governments use local language for communication.
That’s really interesting to know, thank you!
I was actually quite confused to see so much English being used by both Pakistan and India; seeing Israel push hebrew so hard to mask the European roots of their colonial efforts skewed my view.
In retrospect, most African countries still use their colonial-era languages, and expecting asian countries to be different was an incorrect assumption !
However, some US politicians showed no appreciation for China’s magnanimity and generosity. Since they could not conceal China’s aid to the world – including their own country – they smeared it as “mask diplomacy” aimed at influencing the international community. The US was unwilling to assume its responsibility to help other countries, yet it was opposed to China stepping up with such initiatives. Its approach was neither serious nor dignified.

The bioweapon lab that was studying coronaviruses that got closed for safety issues and reopened in 2019 , nothing to see here
one thing I find frustrating in these chinese government authored white papers is that they rarely/never have any sources or citations listed. that paper mentions a number of studies using phrases like ‘a study’ ‘numerous studies’ - why not list the actual references? research papers out of china can be cited just as easily as anything else. I’ve noticed this in other white papers by the CPC as well - their rebuttal to the UN’s OHCHR xinjiang report for example contains no reference or citation list at the end of the document and is written in the same semi-polemic style as this covid paper. this seems like an easy gap to fill that would make their english language statements hit harder.
“What were the real reasons for the shutdown of the Fort Detrick Biological Laboratory in late 2019? The US owes the world an explanation.”
They don’t want to fully accuse the US of making a bioweapon but they do want to imply one. If china really believed this it would still have mask mandates going.
It would make sense why Trump was so quick on the “Chinese Bioweapon made in a lab”, every accusation is a confession after all
they have evidence that the US funded terrorism in China but they dont mention it much
Would not surprise me at all if the random cases of “vape lung” or whatever they called it in late 2019 were actually COVID
I 100% believe this, I was running in some pretty big pothead circles around that time and the news was blaming carts on that and saying it was fake carts but that never happened to anyone I knew.
Especially for it to have just disappeared over night as if a problem as big as fake substances put into vaping cartridges would be resolved so quickly.
I know people who caught something incredibly similar to covid in France in late summer 2019 so I’ve never bought the official narrative
It’s vape associated lung injury and it was caused by Vitamin E acetate it the vape cartridges. COVID is unrelated.
totally understand why they’re throwing accusations back at the US given the lab leak conspiracism, but there’s no good reason to doubt that the virus crossed over to humans somewhere in southern China given that China is a) a rapidly urbanising country in which the potential for crossover events is significantly greater than in an already-urbanised country like the US, and b) is already known (and has been for decades) to have large natural populations of animals that carry the kind of coronavirus that SARS-COV-2 is. There’s a reason that the first SARS also showed up in this region.
it’s not China’s fault, and they did essentially the best job of any govt on earth at handling the contagion given the scale of the outbreak they were suddenly faced with, but we don’t need to get dragged into shit flinging and start throwing ludicrous accusations to match the enemy’s ludicrous accusations. Better to focus on the facts: China was open about the virus from the get-go, sharing as much information as they could, rapidly carrying out research and giving the world the warning through the established channels; other states such as the US failed to heed that warning and co-operate.
no good reason to doubt [the western line]
the document cites a bunch of good reasons
There is always very good reason to doubt the western line, period.
Neither a nor b are evidence that covid originated in China. (If they are true) they’re indicators that something like covid could originate there. But it could also originate in many other places.
Like say, a military biological research lab that has had multiple safety incidents located near a cluster of people who had an unknown respiratory disease months before covid was discovered.
Well this. We know now that it thrives on fur farms for example. What if it originated in those, plenty of such farms in the “West”. In Finland for example the conditions are notoriously bad and there is no oversight.
I remember when it finally got aknowledged that white-tail deer are a coronavirus reservoir. Our local food and safety department announced that there is no need to test anything because there is no risk for spillover and covid-19 isn’t foodborne. They just stated that. So the motivation to test, track and understand just isn’t there in capitalist states.
The bird flu also thrives on fur farms and the “solution” this country chose was to allow the fur farmers to shoot the birds, even rare birds, around the farms to protect their industrialized animal cruelty business.
Huge malpractice, cruelty and overproduction issues were also revealed in local salmon farming. Dead birds in the tanks, the fish are suffocating and sick.
I don’t necessarily think the lab leak is likely, but I definitely think it could have started somewhere else than China and been imported there. Due to the general lack of oversight, lack of systems to notice a novel pathogen and just neoliberal capitalism being the way it is.
The Chinese hypothesis seems to still be that frozen food was the source.
I don’t necessarily think the lab leak is likely,
Hear me out tho, every accusation a confession.
Well true, this is known
Yemen - U.S. Concedes Maritime Defeat | Moon of Alabama

The U.S. Navy has spent over a billion dollar on ammunition on Yemen. It lost more than half a billion in flying equipment and managed to achieve nil.
Others will take note of that record.

I wouldn’t say nothing was accomplished, that conclusion can only be reached in isolation. The Israeli bombings of Yemen that took place over the past two days would not have been possible without the US carrying out their 50 day bombing campaign, with capabilities only the US has, in B-2 stealth bombers and EA-18G Growler Electronic Warfare aircraft. Yes, even for a force with rudimentary air defences such as Ansarallah/the Houthis, those assets/capabilities are now needed to suppress their air defence network to a sufficient level. Yemen has a lot of systems, many Iranian in design or origin, even if locally manufactured. Israel doesn’t have the capabilities despite their large F-35 fleet (no EA-18Gs or B-2s in Israeli service), in reality the only country other than the US even close is China, and surprisingly I’d also put Australia third with their sizeable EA-18G fleet.
The Israeli bombing campaign did billions of dollars in damages to Yemeni civil society, their airport and airliners were completely destroyed, along with cement factories and their sea ports in Ras Isa (that was a US operation) and Hodeidah. Yes, none of this is explicitly military targets, but as the author points out, there are none left that haven’t been hit multiple times by over a decade of bombings. And blowing up tunnel networks in a country as vast as Yemen, which requires unique “bunker buster” stand in bombs which have to be dropped directly over the target, and where the location and purpose of such structures isn’t as well known as say Iran, becomes a very expensive game of whack a mole that produces minimal results beyond leaving a big hole in the ground. That’s why Israel bombed the cement factories, to try halt the repair and construction of these tunnel networks.
Much like the Gaza ceasefire previously, I wonder how this will hold up long term. Are Israel going to continue bombing Yemen as Yemen continues lobbing ballistic missiles in their direction? Will the UK start more bombings on Yemen with their aircraft carrier arriving in the Red Sea soon (unlikely, but if pressured enough, they might not have a choice). Will the US restart bombings on Yemen?
It was easy for me to forget how poor Yemen is when Ansar Allah was fearlessly bleeding the US military of billions of USD, holding the Red Sea blockade, and terrorizing the zionist regime directly.
Yemeni Resistance is cool as fuck and absolutely worth celebrating, but the US-israeli bombing campaigns have probably inflicted a much more difficult cost to bear on Yemeni society, which was already in a dire economic state. Yemeni GDP per capita is like $500 USD.
