Al-Fashir, the capital of North Darfur (a little east of that deep red zone in the west of the megathread map), is the last major holdout of the Sudanese government in that state, and is currently under siege by the RSF. Losing it would be a significant blow to the SAF, though given how the conflict lines are shaping up, it seems increasingly plausible that there will be a de facto - if not de jure - partition of Sudan, unless the military situation substantially changes. This is because the RSF have been pushed out of central Sudan, while the SAF are being pushed out of Western Sudan - although, the situation is pretty complex and has been known to change rapidly before.
As has been a constant feature of the Sudan Civil War - perhaps the single worst humanitarian crisis on the planet right now when measured by numbers - the civilian situation pales in comparison to the military situation, with hundreds of thousands of children dead from famine, and tens of millions of people experiencing extreme food insecurity.
Al-Fashir has been the destination of many thousands of refugees fleeing genocide, and food and aid supplies into the town are being explicitly blocked by the RSF, resulting in scenes similar to what is happening in Gaza right now. The big difference is that fleeing from major battle zones is at least somewhat of an option, though people are often caught and robbed or enslaved or trafficked while moving to neighbouring towns and cities - and these cities are often experiencing similar conditions to places that refugees are leaving.

Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don’t want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it’s just the two of them if you want a little more analysis.
Simplicius, who publishes on Substack. Like others, his political analysis should be soundly ignored, but his knowledge of weaponry and military strategy is generally quite good.

Senior Hamas official Osama Hamdan has accused Israel of turning the Gaza Strip into a “Nazi concentration camp” and carrying out a deliberate policy of genocide against the Palestinian population.
His televised statement coincided with an emergency session of the UN Security Council, convened to address the worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the deteriorating conditions of hostages held by Hamas.
Hamdan claimed that over 22,000 humanitarian aid trucks remain blocked at border crossings, while Gaza suffers from critical shortages of infant formula and medical supplies. According to the Palestinian Health Ministry, 180 people have died from hunger, including 93 children, and 96% of families face extreme food insecurity.
The situation has drawn international alarm. UNICEF reports that one in three people in Gaza go days without food, and UNRWA has described the enclave as a “cemetery of children.” Since October 2023, more than 61,149 Palestinians have been killed, with an average of 28 children dying daily from starvation or attacks.
Hamdan emphasized that Israeli airstrikes have targeted aid distribution centers, resulting in the deaths of over 1,500 civilians. He accused Israel of using starvation as a weapon of war and condemned the international community’s silence, calling it a moral failure.
Regarding Israeli hostages, Hamas stated that they are treated “according to Islamic values” and share the same suffering as Gaza’s population. The group expressed willingness to cooperate with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), but only if permanent humanitarian corridors are opened and Israeli aerial operations cease during aid deliveries.
The release of disturbing videos showing emaciated hostages, including Evyatar David and Rom Braslavski, has intensified global outrage and prompted calls for immediate action. The UN has reiterated that hostage-taking is a war crime, and demanded the unconditional release of all captives.
As famine looms and diplomatic efforts stall, the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza continues to escalate. Hamdan concluded by urging the UN and global powers to enforce binding mechanisms that compel Israel to allow the uninterrupted flow of food, medicine, and humanitarian personnel into Gaza.

The secret system Hamas uses to pay government salaries
After nearly two years of war, Hamas’s military capability is severely weakened and its political leadership under intense pressure.
Yet, throughout the war Hamas has managed to continue to use a secret cash-based payment system to pay 30,000 civil servants’ salaries totalling $7m (£5.3m).

One senior Hamas employee, who served in high positions and is familiar with Hamas’s financial operations, told the BBC that the group had stockpiled approximately $700m in cash and hundreds of millions of shekels in underground tunnels prior to the group’s deadly 7 October 2023 attack in southern Israel, which sparked the devastating Israeli military campaign.

The Trump Administration just issued a new order trying to kill solar and wind because they allegedly use too much land. But somehow this new fervor for “capacity density” won’t apply to ethanol, which uses 100X as much land as solar per unit of energy.
Since the reconciliation bill passed on July 4, the Trump admin has moved quickly to smother the wind and solar industries. The pace and intensity of anti-renewable policy has intensified significantly post-OBBBA.
In the past week, the DOT and FAA have opened a permitting war on proposed and existing wind farms, and Interior has suggested it will enact what is all but a backdoor ban on wind farms on federal land.
