Those who were around in the early days of the news megathread may remember Pedro Castillo, the left-leaning leader of Peru who was deposed in December 2022. He was replaced by Dina Boluarte, the first woman to be President of Peru, who described herself as a progressive but afterwards routinely sided with Peruvian conservatives and American interests. To say she was unpopular is an understatement of titanic proportions - she descended to such lows that she was, at one point, the single most unpopular leader on the planet. As with most deeply unpopular leaders that side with the West, she kept power for a bafflingly long time.
However, on October 10th, after a period of protests against the government, she was impeached and removed by Peru’s Congress in a unanimous vote. José Jerí was sworn in as the new President, who was previously the President of the Congress and is a member of a centrist Peruvian party. The government is trying the classic strategy: keep doing the same thing as before, and sacrifice an unpopular figure - here, Boluarte - in the hopes that this appeases the crowd.
Is this strategy working? It doesn’t really seem to be - protests are not only continuing, but strengthening, as it is clear that neoliberalism will not reformed and the brutality by police will not stop (there was very recently a high-profile case in which a musician, Mauricio Ruiz, was murdered). Controversies surrounding Jerí, including allegations of SA, are already being reported. If Jerí is deposed, the next person in line to try their hand at ruling will be the former army general Roberto Chiabra, who would be the ninth President in less than a decade.

Defense Politics Asia’s youtube channel and their map. Their youtube channel has substantially diminished in quality but the map is still useful.
Moon of Alabama, which tends to have interesting analysis. Avoid the comment section.
Understanding War and the Saker: reactionary sources that have occasional insights on the war.
Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don’t want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it’s just the two of them if you want a little more analysis.
Simplicius, who publishes on Substack. Like others, his political analysis should be soundly ignored, but his knowledge of weaponry and military strategy is generally quite good.

Two arrested over theft of jewels at Louvre museum in Paris | BBC
Don’t trust the fucking cops. Probably just two innocent bystanders because they need their copaganda of “we’re ackchually effective”.
Well, it was fun while it lasted.
Curiously, this is something we’ve seen three times in under a year. We’ve see it happen with the Adjustment, the Kirkening, and now the Napoligone Jewels where people think the culprits made a 100% clean getaway just because the cops didn’t immediately reveal intimate details of ongoing investigations to the media, with boatloads of ink spilled over analyzing the actions of clearly experienced ruthless mobsters only for it to turn out to be a bunch of random dudes whose criminal records consist of stealing Timmy’s pencil in second grade
Is it from watching too much cop dramas where people get the idea that the cops are totally lost if nobody’s locked up within 24 hours? That because we’re privy to investigation details in a fictional show that’s how it works in real life too, so the cops not saying anything = not knowing anything?
The first two had redditors mouthing off about professional hits with their “””analysis””” like they were experts with decades of experience, it will be fun to see whether any of their confident “””analysis””” of this heist turns out to be correct or whether you can’t actually deduce intimate details of a crime solely from a grainy CCTV video taken from another building (a real mystery that has me on the edge of my seat). I guess a reddit “””investigation””” is considered S-class if it doesn’t get some random person death threats and/or shot
If you commit a high profile enough crime for the security forces to just decide to ignore the laws to catch you, you are pretty much fucked.
The surveillance state is completely overwhelming - a single person is trivial to find with those resources when constitutional rights are discarded in pursuit of them.
This is assuming these guys even understand how any of this works nowadays, and weren’t just robbing the Louvre with with regular cell phones on them.
LPT: steal the phone of someone you don’t like before doing a high-profile crime
Actually, if you have your phone on you when you steal the phone, the networks will pick up the phones moving together and likely register that the phones are related.
LPT: don’t bring your phone with you to steal your enemy’s phone before bringing it to a high profile crime. instead give your phone to a friend and have them go do an alibi while you steal it.
Not to disagree with the main point you’ve made, but I also think it’s premature to declare the perps caught until the goods are returned, just like how I think its premature to say they “got the adjustor” when Luigi’s case has more holes than the CEO.
As for why folks always believe the cops have failed within the first 24hrs? I think some of it is that we expect the pigs to be present at the scene of the crime; you’d think there’d be security at the Louvre, or some cops in pretty much any immediate vicinity of a typical US city. I think it shatters the perception of police being preventative to these sorts of high profile crimes.
Oh, and I think folks are always desperate for a win.
ironic because in some parts of the world the penalty for theft is having to fly through CDG and many consider it inhumane
