Let’s go back to the 1993 and imagine the EU inviting Russia to be a member despite US objections. What a different world it would be. Now that US relations are turning to crap forcing the EU to reinvent itself, the opportunity is there again. An EU with unlimited fuel and a trading border with China; then add Canada to the mix, and the EU would span the northern hemisphere.

it sounds like russia is being too lenient with the people who see them as “orcs” and a “threat” but spain could be treated as something relatively different, because they didn’t bow totally to trump in the iran issue

Russia is playing it smart here. By working with individual countries like Spain, they’re undermining the whole EU narrative that Russia can’t be reasoned with and that it’s a threat to Europe. Meanwhile, the US is making it crystal clear that it’s not a friend of Europe by any stretch of imagination. So, the whole EU stance is becoming increasingly untenable.
