I think it’s even more than that: the guy who allegedly did it was just some “apolitical” right-wing-by-default all-American chud, and he allegedly did it because Kirk - whose vile beliefs and rhetoric are standard for GOP demons - was just that loathsome a hatemongering monster. Like think about that: if even that kind of guy, this safely disaffected and intrinsically right wing demographic that they count on to support them by default, can turn on them for how openly monstrous they are, that means a good 90% of the country is suddenly a potential threat.
Their own guys are turning on them for being too evil. That’s something they don’t know how to stop, hence the panicked flailing and sobbing attempts at deflection. They want to control the situation and canonize this little neo-nazi grifter slug that they all actually hated or thought was beneath their notice while frantically trying to bury all the overwhelming public disapproval of Kirk’s bile in the hopes that that could get rid of it.

We don’t have to and can not fix the backwards views of all the proles. All we can do is drag enough of them to our side and educate them to form a critical mass necessary for the vanguard to then lead the rest of them regardless of backwards views.
