Honestly, I think Trump just wanted a win and avoid further humiliation as the war dragged on and the reality started intruding on the markets more. And after that ultimatum, even though he was accepting the 10 point Iranian conditions that had been there for a while as the start for negotiations, he felt he could play it as his threats and tough guy routine bringing the Iranians to the table. But Israel doesn’t want things to stop and thought that keep attacking Lebanon is win-win. Either this prevents the ceasefire and keeps the US in the war, or Iran backs down and Israel can focus on an isolated Hezbollah/Lebanon and annexing Lebanese land.

For political expediency, and because of it becoming binding under US law, it was not passed as a treaty. By US law JCPOA was a different thing that didn’t carry the constitutional bindings of a treaty. So Trump could just rip it up unlike actual treaties. Though as many pointed out, with this Supreme Court, they might just make up some reason that he could do it.

There is definitely incompetence, which I think is most clearly seen in how no one in the administration can answer what is the goals, when will they stop, what is the plan going forward. I think that it is beginning to be clear that Israel wanted to drag the US into this to hopefully make the US destroy Iran for them, but it was sold to Trump as another Maduro operation where they kill Khomeini, Iran has to fire some missiles back in retaliation, but like the 12 day war last year there is a quick rap up after Iran does some minor retaliation for the attacks. And Trump gets to claim that he did regime change with removing Khomeini and adds another victory.

But my idea for the weird reports about all these planes getting downed in friendly fire incidents, whether USian or Quatari, is that the US military feels that that is better for morale and a better look than admitting that Iran can shoot down US planes. We have seen this in previous skirmishes and conflicts of the last few years where a handful of planes get downed in a “friendly fire incident” or some other technical malfunction that doesn’t make sense with publicly released details. I think that the hope is that Iran’s air defenses will be degraded enough soon that this will be all of them, and they can claim that the US never lost a plane to the enemy in this conflict.
