A software developer and Linux nerd, living in Germany. I’m usually a chill dude but my online persona doesn’t always reflect my true personality. Take what I say with a grain of salt, I usually try to be nice and give good advice, though.

I’m into Free Software, selfhosting, microcontrollers and electronics, freedom, privacy and the usual stuff. And a few select other random things as well.

  • Yeah, I’d say the humanist perspective can’t be wrong. I personally think we should add some Rationalist arguments and especially something like ideas from Effective Altruism. Wanting to convince someone on the internet of your perspective regularly has little effect on the world (in itself). And all the yelling really makes my head hurt. Some of it leads to people digging even deeper trenches and they spend all their day focused on some weird rigid ideas and details as if that was the issue. And that’s the predominant way of talking about the subject.

It’s not. The issue is that people suffer and die. And that needs to stop. And we need to find a way to address it.

I’d expect you to become subject to wrong decisions by moderators. Because they deal with agitated people all day and they’re likely biased into thinking you’re just another one of the dozens of people they deal with each day.

And there is a lot of confusion and accusations. I’ve been on the receiving end of that as well. Though I rarely engage in the discussion. I welcome the effort to use reason, though. And do something to stop all the yelling and start going somewhere. It’s not easy. And all the things are connected.

  • Yeah, you have a point there. I mean if I were you, I’d be a bit more careful, some people are pedantic with the details. You really can’t say things like “anti-semitism is far from one of the top most harmful forms of racial discrimination”. Or the prasing you used for the 40s. Because jews aren’t a race. So it’s not racism. The jewish people always have been made up of different ethnicities. And for example Einstein didn’t have a different skin color or race than any other German or American (I believe). Same applies to a lot of other jews.

(And secondly I’m not sure what even to make of all of those comparisons. Generally they’re used to argue against someone. But it’s true that antisemitism isn’t the only issue on earth. We regularly also have atrocities in other places. Or millions of people are slaughtered or starve in Africa. Media reports on that for 3 days and then we forget. But what’s the point here?)

  • I’m pretty sure the nazis killed jewish people because they really hated specifically them. And that had been brooding in Hitler for quite some time already. And then “cleaning” the race was on their agenda, they were big into racism and genocide. It didn’t even stop with the Gypsies. They also killed disabled people, “asocial” people, homosexuals, Jehova’s witnesses, people opposing them, communists and generally a lot of civillians. Other coordinated efforts without death camps include killing most of the intellectuals in Poland, letting millions of people in the Sovjet Union starve to death. And then we get the regular war on top and those victims.

I think whataboutism or comparing those atrocities might be problematic, unless you offer some context and have something specific in mind.

  • Sure, I did not intend to insult you. The t-shirt was a reference to my earlier comment where I intended to say: The quote which started the discussion isn’t even anti fascist, but sadly also in use by the fascists. That was to contextualize what we’re talking about, and only loosely connected to your statements.

You really can’t expect me to answer to like 5 different questions and not make one omission. I expected you to know the difference between “call for” and “report on”. But I respect your wish to bail out. I wish you the best. Sincerely. And my solidarity is with you. I wish there was more I could do. A free America is important to all of us.

  • I know. I mean you’re pretty spot on with your first assessment. Reporting on violence is okay, calling for violence isn’t. There is a difference between the two. The first is allowed per the rules, the second is forbidden.
And yes, this is some form of censorship. It’s outlawed in most jurisdictions, including from the First Amendment in the US. I believe they call that “Imminent lawless action”. And there’s a bit more to it.

But hey. Again, I’m just stating how it is. If you want to argue with me on a personal level about violence… I also think self-defense is okay. I’m kind of opposed to violence, but it might be necessary in some cases. I just don’t understand why you’d like to use a Jefferson quote, when the MAGA people tainted it by printing it on their t-shirts. If I were opposed to the fascists, I’d pick a quote that isn’t used by them as well.

  • I’m not sure if you’re that bad off. If you can only contribute a little, that’s still better than resigning and doing nothing. I think every little bit counts. I’m not sure how electricity works in the USA and whether you can buy an inverter and feed the solar energy into mains and help your fridge and AC during the day… I mean concerning ecology, people usually recommend to cut down on consumerism. And make wise choices. I believe that’s something almost everyone can participate in. Don’t buy a lot of unnecessary cheap plastic stuff on TEMU, buy just as many cars as you need, generally don’t buy stuff you don’t need. Avoid silly packaging if possible. Prefer products which last. And don’t waste stuff. (And a million of other things.)
You seem to be doing quite a few things already. I mean you won’t be saving the planet on your own or something like that. But contributing what you can do still is a positive contribution and I think it will have some effect. A small one, yes but that’s what one individual can do. I think for a big effect we need some coordinated effort and get politics involved… But that’s hard, will take quite some time and any individual again has just a small incluence on politics on a national level.

Edit: Aside from politics, you could also educate other people on a smaller scale, spread the word…

  • So your source is in fact internet propaganda… Do you know why they did it? Or what happened to the boy after?

Police deemed a protest including violence and vandalism wasn’t a good place for an unsupervised 10 year old boy. So they took him out of there, whether he liked it or not. And proceedingly returned him to his father. That’s it.

I mean I wasn’t there. But I have no reason to question the validity of that. And looking at the video, these policemen and women were super chill. They didn’t lay a hand on that child. They barely touched him. And they completely ignored the protesters and bystanders throwing things at them and the kid. Which is very remarkable IMO. Usually if you throw things at police, they don’t like that at all. Especially if they’re not wearing a helmet.

  • But that would still be a democracy, wouldn’t it? I mean that’s just concerned with how a government works and how it’s backed and in relationship with the people.

And yes, I’ve not actively participated in those kinds of protests for a while… But I went past some minor ones and had a brief look at them. Plus I know some people who do such things. So I have relatively direct access to information.

And yes, people might be agitated. But I’m not sure if I get your point. Are you interested in Germany’s society and democracy? And the fine nuances of our democratic processes and the police force and how good they are at their job? I mean there definitely are issues, we’re not perfect. And there are both structural issues and people who are unfit for the job. But does that make Scholz a dictator? I’d say no.

So… What’s the last Israel or climate crisis protest in Germany you’ve been participated?

  • You sound to me like someone who gets their news straight out of some propaganda machine. And you just regurgitate that and spew it out… Since you want me to do my research. Did you do your’s? Have you been to Ukraine recently? Did you check the poll? Because it’s certainly out there and I’d love to hear about the intricate details on how they did it wrong. And have you been part of a protest in Germany? Because last time I did was 2 days ago. And it didn’t quite match your description. And I think nobody questions whether Ukraine is under martial law. There is a war waging in their country and people are literally dying. So you don’t really need to repeat that every two sentences. Everyone is already aware of that.
