religion is a form of technology that allows humans to feel better about doing aweful stuff. atonement or forgieness, or salvation, if you will. religion is what allowed one clan to have that extra little bit of edge in battle like bunch of monks chanting buffs at critical time in human evolution. thats why the major religions are based around the nile mesopotamia and india, the fertile land means people dont have to walk around as much so they tell stories more to pass the time. fingers get used to write in the soil, alphabets make laws and books or scrolls, maybe hieroglpyhs. some stories contextualize growing into adulthood or dealing with death. religion adds a final esoteric dimension beyond this world that must be taken as ‘faith’. to me this is just a demonstration of obedience and it utilized as such to win wars and shit. it gives meaning to people who otherwise would literally have meaningless lives other than simply being pieces of shit, religion lets them also feel good about it.
