    The cringiest part is that this iPhone manufacturing is very important for the government because it’s one of the rare cases of high tech manufacturing capability being cultivated in India. The government does not concern itself with tangible metrics like literacy rates, life expectancy etc. so marquee projects like this are an important source of PR. And they have fucked this up too.

    It speaks volumes about the futility of “derisking” as well if the only other place they could find to build iPhones is India. India is never going to be to able to produce anything at the rate and scale at which China does. This isn’t just because of supply chains not being place and the lack of technological knowledge, but the quality of labour in India is not good owing to the low literacy and health levels. And they don’t have any other move apart from this.

      Yeah, people really don’t appreciate how the whole system works together, and that you can’t just put a factory in a different country and expect the same results.
