It’s kind of baffling to me. All of my friends are to some degree engaged in politics. But there are probably whole chunks of society that just brain rot through the day looking at memes and don’t really think about anything.

I think I kind of radicalized one of the guys I worked with just by talking to him about broad strokes of history and labor. If instead of me they had hired some bland “don’t talk about anything” standard guy, he might not have learned much. Talking to people can help.

There was a news article a while ago about maga hats saying their church was repeating “liberal talking points”, when the pastor was simply quoting Jesus.

Most of the maga hats don’t care. They found their tribe and that’s all that matters to them now.

Facts and quotes don’t change people’s minds. In-group belonging does. So long as they see you as an enemy, they won’t listen to anything you say. We’re all vulnerable to that, but maga hats seem especially vulnerable.

That always reminds me of the “missing missing reasons” post. It’s about estranged parents specifically, but I think the behavior shows up elsewhere. People’s ego is too fragile to let them remember or admit some details, and their emotions are creating their whole reality.

Ok so I’m not going to say that we all need to eat dirt so long as anyone is worse off than we are, but that’s a lot of money that could be spent on anything else.

I’m not christian but camel through the eye of a needle, man. You can’t be a good person when you’re sitting on that much wealth, and Bezos isn’t even trying.

Aren’t great on… median? Majority fall below some arbitrary standard of “decent”?

Some kinds of people (often conservatives) don’t use words to convey consistent meaning. They use words for the effect it has on the audience. It’s emotions.

They see something bad, they reach into their bag of bad-thing-words, and pull out “Marxist”. That’s it.

They are in a fundamental sense stupid.

The most important thing for people, and by people I mean all of us at times, is in-group belonging. None of us are immune to that. We look to our peers for cues on how to behave and what to believe.

Some people consider like scientists and experts in-group, and trust them. Some don’t.

This need for in-group cohesion is more important than facts and figures. It’s more important than the text of some book.

So when all your friends and family are saying that Christianity means one thing, it’s unlikely you’re going to disagree.

Most self described Christians don’t really follow their religion very well.

I think this is one of those pearl clutching communities. Borderline collaboration, but it’s their power to enforce their rules.

Oh I read something interesting about that once. I think it came at it as big city vs urban modes of thought.

Someone who lives in a big city surrounded by many people realizes quickly you need robust systems. You just don’t have the time to handle every case as a unique circumstance. So you have laws and regulations to shift things earlier in the process when they’re easier to deal with (eg: fire codes before the building gets built, instead of no codes and a fire hazard)

The other mode doesn’t think like that. They can have simple laws on the books, and if there’s a problem they’ll just go talk it out with Brian the sheriff. Sure abortion is bad but you know little Suzie she just made a mistake, you can make an exception for her, right?

Obviously the “treat every case as special and rely on informal social connections” doesn’t scale or consistently deliver fair, just, outcomes. But according to some half remembered post I read, that’s how some right wing people view the world. You can have draconian laws, but the people enforcing them know when to apply them (against those assholes) and when not (for good folks who made a mistake)

So, I guess, corruption.

I’ve thought about that. But that seems like a terrible strategy, because it lets the Republicans do anything. The Republicans do a bad thing, or accuse you of doing a bad thing, and now you’re incapable of responding to it?

Why didn’t the democrats demand hand recounts when the election was initially called? It felt like they all just rolled over and accepted defeat.

I got 2 (two) pieces of anti-zohran, pro-cuomo, mail when I checked today. They’re playing Zohran up as a scary risk and Cuomo as the safe, experienced, candidate.

According to the fine print, one of them was from “Fix the City, Inc”, where DoorDash is a top donor. Gross.

$9.4 million could be used for a lot of good things instead of giving the police more toys they’ll use for evil.

Understanding the conservative mind means accepting “my group is good. when my group does something, it’s good.” That’s it. Well, that and “whatever is good for me and mine right now is good”.

There’s no grand underlying theory or unifying thought. They’re just assholes
