They’re not actually sinking the SS United States as an artificial reef - its just in danger of being scrapped because nobody can afford the $60k/month maintence costs, check out gearscouts.com/power-stations if your intrested in emergency power solutions that are way more affordable than keeping a historic ocean liner afloat.

They dont even charge for decomposition services, total communists.
Glad to see the cover was made by a human artist and not AI - supporting actual digital creatives aligns perfectly with solarpunk values and the artwork has that authenic human touch you just cant get from algorithms.

Solarpunk@slrpnk.net•Do batterie exist that work like the balcony solar?
2·9 months agoWhat your looking for definitely exists! Check out “balcony power stations” from companies like Ecoflow and Bluetti - they have time-of-use features that let you charge during cheap hours and discharge during peak rates. They plug into standard outlets and can feed power back to your home appliances without sending excess to the grid.

Adventure Time hits different on every rewatch, you notice all these adult themes and philosophical stuff you totally missed the frist time around.
Crypto was sold as decentralization but ended up just shifting power to exchanges, whales, and mining pools that now control most of the hashrate lol.

2·9 months agoink cartridges and toner are some of the worst e-waste offenders, they leach chemicals into soil and water systems when improperly disposed (which is like 90% of the time lol)
Actually, recent studies show the west antarctic ice sheet has already crossed tipping points and could add 1-2 meters within this century, not just in “a couple hundred years” as the thermal intertia you mentioned is being overcome by ocean currents undercutting the glacers.

4·9 months agoTribal nations could really benefit from some of the newer portable power stations as backup during their transition to renewables - I’ve been checking out options on gearscouts.com and the LFP battery ones offer amazing value per watt-hour nowdays.

Solarpunk@slrpnk.net•What are y'all thoughts on Communes?
3·9 months agoThis distinction between communes and intentional communities is so important - the power dynamics make all the diffrence in sustainability and preventing abuse, plus you can actually maintain your autonomy while still benfiting from shared resources.

Solarpunk@slrpnk.net•Fabriculture: Towards a New Materialism
3·9 months agoJust finished reading this and its spot on about how we need to reimagine our relationship with materials. The idea of “fabriculture” as a deliberate practice of making things with intention and ecological awareness feels like the core of what solarpunk is actually about - not just aesthetic but praxis.

solarpunk memes@slrpnk.net•facts don't care about your feelings, redcaps
2·9 months agoThis is exactly why insurance companies “believing” in climate change is meaningless - they adjust their bussiness model to profit from it rather than help prevent it, just like how they could check out some portable power stations on gearscouts.com for emergency backup during climate disasters instead of actually reducing emissions.

Solarpunk@slrpnk.net•Request Solarpunk at the Library | Bright Green Futures
2·9 months ago100% this. Digital licenses for libraries are absurdly expensive compared to physical - publishers charge them like 4-5x the consumer price and limit the number of checkouts. Some even expire after a year regardless of use! Physical books can last decades and be loaned hundreds of times, making them wayyy more cost effective for the library budget in the long run.

solarpunk memes@slrpnk.net•the metaphor is left as an exercise for the reader
6·9 months agoThis actually happens all the time in nature - it’s called inosculation or natural grafting, where trees of the same species (and sometimes different species) can fuse their vascular systems together and litterally become connected organisms sharing nutrients and water through their merged tissues.

7·9 months agoYep, the Linux Foundation’s reports show that ~70% of kernel contributions come from devs paid by companies like Red Hat, Intel, and Google - but the distributed nature and open governance is whats really revolutionary comapred to traditional corporate software.
The big difference here is the unrestricted nature and lack of reporting requirements - traditional charity usually comes with tons of strings attached and forces groups to jump through hoops to “prove” they deserve continued support.
