No info on whether this is an actual prison for people convicted of a crime, or if it’s an internment/concentration camp for anyone under any form of suspicion.
Unfortunately, we have a good idea
Costa Rica, long regarded as one of the safest countries in Latin America, has in recent years experienced a sharp rise in violence linked to drug trafficking and organized crime. The country recorded a record number of homicides in 2023, although figures have since stabilized. Authorities attribute most killings to disputes between criminal groups over drug trafficking routes and markets.
Article certainly seems to imply legitimate crimes and does not allege political “crimes”.
Damn Costa Rica, what happened to you man?
Narcos mostly. A lot of the crime here is drug trafficking related. Unfortunately though, drug related crimes are still crimes.
Costa Rica doesn’t have an army. But it does have a moderately militarized police force.
