Not a Tankie, but they would point out there was no actual massacre and that it was relatively peaceful in the square itself. Of course there were thousands that died around the square at different times leading up to it.

It took so long to break the protest because they had to assemble forces from across China since locals were too sympathetic and wouldn’t wantonly slaughter them if they refused to back down once confronted by the state.
