The Federal Court of Australia has ordered mining giant Fortescue to pay the Yindjibarndi Ngurra Aboriginal Corporation more than A$150 million in compensation for cultural loss caused by iron ore mining on Yindjibarndi Country in Western Australia’s Pilbara region, in what is being described as the largest native title […]
The Yindjibarndi had originally sought nearly A$1.8 billion in compensation, arguing the amount should reflect both the scale of cultural loss and the immense profits generated from the mine, which reportedly earned Fortescue around A$80 billion since operations began.
It never ceases do amaze me how companies get to keep their ill gotten gains…
Earning $80 billion and then being fined $150 million is less than 0.2% in fines…
If I robbed a bank and stole $10,000. I bet I would have to pay all of that back and with a fine and prison sentence on top… Not a less than $2 fine…
can we please stop fining corporations, and start sending the executives to prison
Both please
fined

Getting less than 0.1% of what they sought doesn’t seem like a win to me. And you can’t replace a cultural loss with mere money. What a gyp.
If it’s a fine and nobody goes to jail, it’s just the cost of doing business.
