If the United States can do it, then why not the Somalis?
I used to work on a cruise ship that went through the Gulf of Aden many times. We always got paid extra, had to do piracy drills, and IDF forces came onboard and set up machine gun nests on our outer decks. Always a bizarre time.
Did the guns ever have to be used (even in a bluffing manner)?
Never.
Fun fact, a significant portion of the time, having such weapons is illegal wherever they’re going, so after leaving the pirate area and arriving in port, they just… throw the weapons overboard.
I saw them onboard and land their gear on both ends…every time. Nobody dumped anything overboard.
This is absolutely a stupid question, but as someone who has zero knowledge about ships (especially large ones), how can they board them while sailing? Because I just can’t figure out how they can hijack them if they are moving, unless they are smaller boats where it’s physically possible to board while moving.
All we did was completely annihilate the local environment and industries they depended on to survive, why would they do this!?
