He’s saying privileged people shouldn’t turn the other cheek, and that oppressed people should turn the other cheek for some reason. That’s what I’m focusing on.
No, he’s very obviously not saying that, as it completely contradicts the rest of what he’s saying. Instead of assuming that what someone says is nonsensical, perhaps you should try for 3 seconds to think of a different interpretation.
That’s what I’m focusing on.
Yeah, I noticed because of the way you ignored the rest.
No, you really didn’t, considering how you failed to comprehend the basic meaning of the phrase.
Really weird hill to die on. Either you are saying people should turn the other cheek , which means victims of genocide, persecution, and just general crime should simply be a good Christian and lie down and die quietly,
Or you are saying people witnessing such events should also turn the other cheek and lie down and wait for their turn to die quietly
Nah it’s kinda mediocre, especially for a manifesto. Like if he was just speaking off the cuff I wouldn’t call him on this.
(CW: rape mention)
Objection 1: As a Christian, you should turn the other cheek.
Rebuttal: Turning the other cheek is for when you yourself are oppressed. I’m not the person raped in a detention camp. I’m not the fisherman executed without trial. I’m not a schoolkid blown up or a child starved or a teenage girl abused by the many criminals in this administration.
Turning the other cheek when someone else is oppressed is not Christian behavior; it is complicity in the oppressor’s crimes.
Actually, if you are being oppressed, turning the other cheek is usually a suboptimal option. It’s cool that he’s doing…the bare minimum?..of saying “privileged people shouldn’t be complicit in the oppressor’s crimes”, but IMO this manifesto is centrist learned helplessness at its finest.
Edit: turned down the heat, I’m critiquing the manifesto, not yelling at anyone.
I don’t think it’s bad to be like “people who are in a privileged position compared to the oppressed are more morally weighted to stop oppression”. It’s not a contradiction to say the oppressed would know better what to do about oppression, but on the question of acting upon it it’s easier to actually do shit about when you’re not already crushed by whatever social force.
Wait it gets funnier:
Got it, so activism is for privileged people only 😆
That’s not what that part means. The message there is actually good.
turning the other cheek is not a good message
He’s literally saying people shouldn’t turn the other cheek. Did you even read it?

Yes, I read the text, unlike everyone responding to me, unfortunately.

Not a great look. Are you Christian?
Okay fine, I’m really not interested in getting into an argument over this point.

Huh, that’s weird. Another win for Lemmy over PieFed I guess 🤷.
Yep.
Nah, I think it’s specific to a.n, it’s setup to require login to show anything?
I did see your comment shortly after I posted mine, but due to federation you caught it just before it got deleted.

Good to know, I might have to bug the Nexus community about that.
