A judge on Wednesday granted Luigi Mangione only a slight delay of his federal trial in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, moving it from September to October instead of next year, as his lawyers had wanted.

Literally the first line of the article. Mangione’s side requested the delay.

Mangione’s lawyers had argued that back-to-back trials on a compressed timeline would violate his constitutional rights.

The federal murder charges were dropped due to lack of federal jurisdiction. The state level murder charges are the highest remaining crime so that will be tried first. After the NY court rules on the murder charge, he will go to federal court to face the federal charge of stalking.

Manguonie’s lawyers want more time to prepare the second case and were only granted some of the delay they asked for.
