Ecuador is living under a “true dictatorship,” former President Rafael Correa declared Friday, after a court suspended his Citizens’ Revolution party—the nation’s largest opposition force—in a move he denounces as a political maneuver by President Daniel Noboa to eliminate his competition ahead of upcoming local elections.

“The one who ‘reports’ is the puppet prosecutor Alarcon. They haven’t notified us of anything. We haven’t had the right to defend ourselves. Nothing. Never forget this name: Joaquin Viteri, rent-a-judge of the TCE. They have no shame,” Correa wrote on social media.

“Noboa: you are a coward. Your whole life you have lived by cheating. Will the homeland allow this new outrage?” the former president questioned.

Last week, Correa had warned that the government’s intention was to take away their party so they could not participate in the upcoming elections.
