News of Tracee Mergen’s decision came before agents fatally shot Alex Pretti, another US citizen in Minneapolis

A supervisor in the FBI’s Minneapolis field office who unsuccessfully attempted to investigate the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent who fatally shot Renee Nicole Good in the city on 7 January has resigned, according to multiple reports.

News of agent Tracee Mergen’s resignation surfaced shortly before federal agents fatally shot Alex Pretti in Minneapolis on Saturday. Pretti and Good were both 37-year-old US citizens.

Mergen resigned following pressure from the bureau in Washington DC to discontinue an inquiry into ICE officer Jonathan Ross, who shot Good to death as videos showed her trying to drive away from a confrontation, according to the New York Times and NBC News.

    Why do these people resign?? Just keep doing your job until you are fired. It is a pension thing?

      I was wondering the same thing.

      Turns out, there are a variety of reasons, in some situations, disobeying an order could result in jail. In other situations, resigning before getting fired puts more disgrace/shame on the employer. Sometimes, that person was fired, but due to some negotiation, it gets announced as a resignation.

      I know there are others too, I heard a really good explanation on a podcast, and I can’t remember how it went.

      I wouldn’t keep working for this administration even if I thought there was some good I could do from within. There’s a whole host of moral arguments one could raise in defense of quitting, but self preservation is the best one. I wouldn’t want to find myself defending my decision after this is all over with something like “no seriously guys, I was undercover the whole time”. Would you?
