As a Canadian, I wouldn’t fight for the existing state, but I would fight for a socialist/communist-aligned partisan force if given the opportunity.

True. Imo, if there was such a scenario, the goal would be to basically turn any insurgent group into a revolutionary one, either by intent or effect.
Italian partisans by the end of ww2 were a motley crew of Christians, communists, monarchists, liberals, Jewish people, and resistance fighters from other places.
They made the fash bleed nonetheless.
