I feel like my head wants to spin knowing this; when hurricane Katrina happened, Venezuela and Cuba attempted to send aid to save American lives; they attempted to save the lives of people who wouldn’t care if we invaded them and then made movies about our heroic ‘boys’ and their cool combat moments, or how the troops are the real victims in all this.

There’s very few times I’ve been moved to tears by something on a screen, but at the end of Michael Moore’s documentary about privatised healthcare - Sicko - he takes some suffering Americans to Cuba to receive treatment. One is a 9/11 first responder who can’t pay for his respiratory medication (caused by 9/11). They get treated, and get some scans, and get it all for free.

Then they have to get back on the boat and return to America.

And you can see them looking back at Cuba as it gets smaller and smaller. And I started thinking about how such a beautiful thing has been under siege since it’s existence. And a tear rolled down my cheek.

I remember that; I was actually weeping when the lady was crying about how she can’t afford the meds she needs back home but in Cuba it’s free (or at least cheap; I think she had to buy it, but for like basically nothing).

And like…if you don’t want to deal with Cuba, then YOU don’t deal with Cuba; leave other countries alone to have trade with them; all these sanctioned countries and it’s like, just leave them alone for God’s sake.

All these people who just want to live their lives in peace, and this vicious, unrelenting government can’t just leave well enough alone; and you know what? If not for comprador governments in key nations in the global South, and vassals in Western Europe (or actually…Western Europe is a lost cause inherently; former colonial powers still have a colonial mindset), then the world could easily pressure our government to just stop. I recall reading about Saudi Arabia threatening to cut off oil (or maybe they went through with it) ages ago and you know what? We capitulated on Israel; the global South has so much power and I wish they would flex it; the Soviet Union’s and Cuba’s greatest gifts to the world was solidarity, the loss of the SU has been a catastrophe for mankind.
