  • I expect that US politicians who actually want to serve the public find themselves in the same predicament as voters who want to support good things for humanity.

The two-party situation is not only an emergent property of our voting system, but it is entrenched culturally as well.

So if you want to do good things in a government position, do you take up the label of a coalition that has plenty of shitty members and bad policies, or do you wear your independent badge with honor in obscurity?

Oh and the other party is WAY WAY FUCKING WORSE in every conceivable way and is not an option. Even the worst aspects of your potential party pale in comparison to what those other guys do on those same policies.

And the best part is that those way way fucking worse evil guys consistently get half the votes!

  • I think there is a real, deep seated conditioned response in a lot of Americans to just assume things will work out and it will be OK in the long run. Basically a form of privilege to not worry about the problems of the world because somebody else will definitely fix it.

I’m a white male american born into conservative culture who grew up in the 80s and 90s , and I definitely had that feeling instilled in my head along the way. For gen x and boomers who spent more of their early years in more of the post-ww2 US dominance, it’s probably worse.

  • The meme got me thinking of what modern “eco-terrorism” could look like. Assuming data centers were involved, we would be following along in the exact opposite of terrified.

But your version seems to fit this timeline better. It feels more uniquely American to imagine armed militias assaulting and razing facilities out of desperation rather than conservation.

Oh shit. This is how we get private corpo-militaries isn’t it?
