I think it also supposes that the entire reason Iran would be able to become a world power is because the world will continue to run on oil. Their power comes from denying or allowing the passage of oil from West Asia to the rest of the world, but if the world transitions away from oil, then their power goes away. Obviously that won’t happen within the next few years but it’s not like you can build a 500 year empire off of blocking 20% of the world’s oil supply.

Just today I was thinking how nice it would be to quit my horrible job, but I guess I better keep grasping this rose branch as tightly as possible

No AI slop please. Even if it’s “official” government use of AI (does that mean all the groyper shit that the White House churns out is fair to post? gag)

I like to think that 50 years from now, people will look back on all the ultraprocessed shit we eat with the same revulsion we now have for asbestos filtered cigarettes and cocaine cola

I had no idea! About the same length as Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas. I’ll check it out

If we want to be pedantic about it, I think there’s a meaningful difference between a lathe of heaven and a monkey’s paw. A lathe situation is one where you will something into existence by imagining it (sometimes without meaning to, as happens to the protagonist in the story), whereas a monkey’s paw situation is where you wish for something intentionally, but it manifests with terrible consequences. I’ve never read The Monkey’s Paw, but The Lathe of Heaven is excellent, like most of Le Guin’s stories.

israeli tourists are a fucking plague in the Brazilian Northeast.
Is northeastern Brazil a popular tourist destination for Israelis specifically?
Actually I just looked it up and I didn’t realize how much tourism happens in Bahia

This is a bit off topic but I wonder the same thing about the US. How will other countries manage the US’s decline when the US will probably be foaming at the mouth to use its nukes as it’s removed from its position as the world hegemon? Will its nukes be handed off to a new type of government like the USSR’s, or will it be forced to dismantle them?
As for Israel it seems like the only option will be to convince the US that disarming Israel and retreating from the Middle East is better than allowing Zionists to take the world down with them.
